This is really helpful information, I've wondered about a lot of this as a writer, especially if you don't get permission. Thank you for sharing and looking forward to your book!
Thank you for reading! And I’m glad it was helpful. This is the sort of stuff that I think would be helpfully orienting for those who also might write books on hard things.
Wow this is exactly what I needed to read. I’ve been writing in a similar way. My research and emails, evidence etc is very solid, however I’m still careful to write in such a way that I’m using pseudonyms and non identifying details, while still being visual enough that those who were there, who were part of it, know.
I’ve been thinking through how to put what I’ve written into a book. For now it’s all been through Substack.
Other victims have also written their own stories and we’ve collaborated together using shared memories and information on some.
This has been so helpful. Thank you. And I can’t wait to read your book. Seems very very familiar.
You're very welcome! Thank you for reading it. It's sensitive stuff, and it really does take so much extra mental energy. But I'm glad I took the extra care!
This was a fantastic well thought out post thank you for sharing this info. I have been researching this very topic for when and if it comes time for me to share my story. Looking forward to your book!
You’re welcome! So many people asked, and I am not gatekeeper, so I was glad to share. Having the info I needed on hand made providing corroborating material easier, but it wasn’t an easy process. I still had to sift through old hurt to give them what they needed for the book to be as it is. But I’m glad I did.
You’re welcome! The publishing process can feel so much like a secret kept from others; so, I hope this helps orient anyone trying to write in a similar vein.
This is very helpful, thank you! At this point, I’m taking the self-publishing route and I’ve been incredibly conscientious of this exact thing for these exact reasons.
You're welcome. If you get closer to publishing and want to chat about what sort of comments their in-house counsel and the editor gave me, I'd be glad to share more one-on-one. Now, I just have a folder on my drive where I saved their comments, the corroboration documents I needed, and all the other corroborating material, including video, audio. etc. I hope we don't need it, but I do have it organized at the very least.
Many people don’t have to provide corroborating material unless they share a personal story of harm experienced. Thankfully, I kept a folder on my computer with everything I gathered before I began to write OTHERED; so, I didn’t really need to do that much digging when it came to providing the material they needed.

Thank you Jenai, I’m looking forward to digging into your Substack more too.
I’m keen to talk to you about your publisher. I worry that self publishing I might run into issues with a legal read.
Our situation is now out in the media and public sphere now so I think that helps

This was so helpful to read. Thank you for spelling this all out.

So interesting to read about the legal process! That didn’t apply to my book so it’s fascinating to see all that goes into it.

I just preordered today. 🙌🏼
Thank you so much, Tabitha!
